The Qingming Festival serves as both a traditional time for honoring ancestors and enjoying spring, featuring variable weather, high germ activity, and increased pollen and mosquitoes. Patients with hematological diseases typically exhibit reduced immunity, low platelet counts, a tendency for infections, and bruising. Activities such as memorial ceremonies and outdoor excursions, which may seem ordinary to healthy individuals, pose multiple risk factors for these patients. The combination of spring rain humidity, crowding, and a complex natural environment, along with the emotional stress of mourning, may disrupt apparent stability and lead to sudden health deterioration. Therefore, it is crucial to take precautions in advance.
1. Strictly prevent infections: Maintain the first line of defense.
Post-chemotherapy, after transplants, and during periods of bone marrow suppression, patients exhibit extremely low resistance, and a simple cold can trigger a serious infection. It is essential to avoid large, enclosed, and humid places of worship as much as possible; family members may represent those with weakened immune systems. If going out is necessary, wearing a mask properly, staying away from pollen, willow allergens, and shrubs is crucial, and upon returning home, washing hands, changing clothes, and cleaning the mouth and nose to reduce the risk of cross infections.
2. Carefully prevent bleeding and falls.
Patients with low platelet counts may experience bruising from minor bumps, gum bleeding, and even severe internal bleeding. During the Qingming Festival, it is advisable to avoid climbing, rushing, or engaging in prolonged strenuous activities, and to wear non-slip shoes. In daily life, avoid forceful coughing, using toothpicks, and opt for a soft-bristled toothbrush. If a large bruise appears without obvious cause, if there is persistent nasal bleeding, black stools, headache, or vomiting, seek medical attention immediately.
3. Pay attention to emotions and diet: often overlooked details.
Excessive sadness and anxiety can directly reduce immunity. Family members should offer emotional support and accompany the patient, who can engage in moderate walking and sun exposure to enhance mood. The diet should be warm, light, clean, and easily digestible, avoiding raw vegetables, salads, and leftover foods. Supplements or home remedies should not be taken without prior consultation to avoid overburdening the liver and kidneys. All treatment plans must be discussed with a physician first.
4. Stay alert to tick bites: a hidden deadly threat.
Before and after the Qingming Festival, ticks are active and can cause 'febrile syndrome with thrombocytopenia', whose symptoms closely resemble the exacerbation of hematological diseases and can be fatal for patients. When entering forests or grasslands, wearing long sleeves and long pants is essential, adjusting the cuffs properly, and avoiding sitting or lying down in the grass. Upon returning home, carefully check all skin. If a tick is found, do not yank it out forcefully; it can be moistened with alcohol for complete extraction, and medical attention should be sought immediately.
The significance of Qingming is to remember and, more importantly, to respect and appreciate life. Throughout my years in the hematology department, I have always believed that proper treatment, scientific prevention, and perseverance are the best ways to care for life. Remembering the ancestors without forgetting the present, taking good care of our blood is key to health. I wish that every patient with hematological diseases has a stable and healthy life, and that each family has fewer worries and more peace of mind.
